In the whirlwind of life, it’s all too easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Like many, I found myself caught in a vortex of constant want, surrounded by a society obsessed with the idea of more. More gadgets, more clothes, more, more, more – until it dawned on me: In chasing after all these things, what was I actually catching? Certainly not happiness. Certainly not peace. Unbeknown to me, I had never formally defined my values.
This realisation didn’t hit me like a lightning bolt; it was more of a slow awakening. As I grew older, I observed those around me, their lives cluttered with things they didn’t need, and I noticed a shift within myself. A drift away from the present, a fading focus, and a burgeoning sense of unease. I was adopting mindsets from others that were alien to my core values without even realising it. The further I strayed, the more turmoil I felt, the easier it was to snap at minor inconveniences. All this time, I was betraying my own principles.
Defining Values
The turning point came unexpectedly, from an online exercise about defining one’s values. It was simple: Write them down, make them tangible, and suddenly, you have a road map back to yourself. This exercise was more than just an activity; it was a revelation. It allowed me to crystallise my beliefs, revisit them, and realign my life’s focus. It was, in a word, therapeutic.
So, I thought, why not share my list? Perhaps it could spark a journey of rediscovery for someone else. Here they are, my values, laid bare for you to see, and maybe, just maybe, inspire you to create your own list.
Stay Cool and Be Humble
Humility reminds us that we’re all human, fallible, and in this together. It keeps our egos in check and our hearts open.
Don’t Lie, Be Honest
Honesty isn’t just a policy; it’s the foundation of trust. Living by this value keeps relationships transparent
Don’t Harm Animals
Respecting all forms of life enriches our own, fostering a sense of compassion and empathy towards the world around us.
Don’t Intentionally Hurt Others When Provoked
Responding to provocation with kindness diffuses tension and often leads to understanding, not escalation.
Try to Live with Less
Simplicity is liberating. It shifts our focus from material possessions to experiences and relationships that truly matter.
Be Appreciative
Gratitude turns what we have into enough. It’s a reminder to cherish the present and find joy in the little things.
See Problems as Opportunities
This mindset transforms obstacles into stepping stones, encouraging growth and resilience.
Strengthen My Relationships Around Me
Strong relationships are the backbone of a fulfilled life, providing support, love, and joy.
Be Kind to Others
Kindness is a universal language. It breaks down barriers and builds up souls.
Accept People for Who They Are
Embracing diversity enriches our lives, teaching us new perspectives and fostering acceptance.
Try Not to Let Others’ Opinions Influence How I Live My Life
Living authentically means steering your own ship, guided by your values, not swayed by external judgements.
Armed with this list, I’ve created a guide for myself—a reminder of who I am and where I want to be. If you’ve felt adrift, I encourage you to try this exercise. Define what’s truly important to you, write it down, and see the difference it makes. It’s not just about knowing your values, it’s about living them. And in doing so, we don’t just find ourselves, we find happiness, too.
If you’re seeking a bit of inspiration to embark on your own values-defining journey, you’ve come to the right place. The exercise of pinning down what truly matters to you is as personal as your fingerprint, and there’s no one-size-fits-all. Here are some fresh and diverse examples to spark creativity and some help to create a values list that’s as unique as you are:
Pursue Lifelong Learning
Embrace the mindset of a perpetual student. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, learning a language, or deepening your professional expertise, commit to growing your knowledge and skills.
Savour the Slow Moments
In a world that glorifies busyness, value the quiet, slow moments. Enjoy a cup of coffee without checking your phone, watch the sunset, or simply breathe deeply for a few minutes.
Foster Community
Value building and nurturing community spaces. Shared experiences and support networks enrich our lives.
Embrace Vulnerability
See strength in vulnerability. Being open about your feelings and experiences can forge deeper connections and encourage others to share their stories.
Practice Environmental Stewardship:
Make choices that respect and protect the environment. Reducing waste, supporting sustainable brands, or advocating for green policies, every action counts.
Champion Equality and Justice:
Stand up for fairness, equality, and justice in all aspects of life. Support causes and organisations that fight discrimination and strive to make the world a more equitable place.
Cultivate Joy
Find and nurture what brings you joy, whether it’s through creativity, play, or laughter. Making space for joy can be a radical act in times of stress.
Embrace Minimalism
Find freedom in simplicity by valuing quality over quantity. A minimalist approach can apply to possessions, commitments, and even digital life, allowing more room for what truly matters.
Value Health and Wellness
Prioritise your physical and mental health through regular exercise, mindful eating, and self-care practices. A healthy lifestyle supports everything else you value.
Seek Adventure and New Experiences
Be open to stepping outside your comfort zone. Value the growth and excitement that come from new experiences.
Each of these examples represents a beacon that can guide your decisions and actions. As you reflect on what resonates with you, remember that your values list is a living document. It’s meant to evolve as you do, serving as a compass that keeps you aligned with your deepest beliefs and aspirations. Grab a pen and let these ideas inspire your own list. Who knows where this journey of introspection will lead you?
